BOROUGH COUNCIL.
Tho ordinary meeting of the Borough Council was held last evening, when the following members were present:—His
Worship tho Mayor (Mr John Townloy), Ors Harding, Rees, Bright, Webb, Whinray, Sheridan, Miller, and Lysnar,
CORRESPONDENCE. The Telegraph Department wrote replying to tho letter of tbo Council in regard to improved telephone facilities. The reply was similar to that reoeived by other local bodioe. —Or Harding said the Oounoil knew before sending the communication that tbo Department would

A communication was received from the Department of Roads-asking that tbe Cook County Council should be relieved from their contribution to the maintenance of the town bridges.—lt was pointed out tbat there. was no change in the clroumstances prevailing when the allocation by the commission was made.—Or Bright proposed that a reply to this effeot should be given, the Mayor Beoonding.—Agreed
MrF. Ardern wrote drawing attention of the Council to the state of Stafford street, Whataupoko, repairs to which were necessary.—The Overseer said the road had not been formed.—The Overseer wee inetruoted to undertake the wont ei an early opportunity. ( \ . The Liberal Association forwarded 8 resolution urging that the lands between l'e Karaka and Motu on the route of railway should be acquired for closer settlement.—Or Bright thought the Association should Btate to what lands they referred, A motion to that effect was carried. The Public Works Department wrote stating that the eight acres on the' Waikanae beach, which the Council sought to acquire, was the property of the Department.—Cr Whinray urged: that an application should be made to the Minister of Railways to have the land vested in the Borough. It would make an excellent reoreation ground, “ a breathing for the band and the nursemaids. —i* was decided that steps should be taken to see if the reserve in question could br. Ohtained. - . Mr W. Good submitted plane of, proposed samples rooms at the back of his Gladstone road property for the approval of the Council. Ho asked that openings should be allowed in the party wall for the purpose of giving light. He was prepared to close the openings up when called upon by the Council to do so.—Permission was granted subject to an .undertaking hemg made that the openings would bs closed up when the applicant was called upon to do so. - „ . . Mr H. J. Bushnell wrote offering to provide the Council with office aoootumodation in hiß new buildings in street.—lt was decided to reply that tow Council had no intention of removing from their present quarters. Mr R. Hay wrote forwarding his solicitor's opinion in regard to the agreement with the Council in reference to his appointment as engineer to carry out .the Borough works. Several alterations ana amendments were made by Mr Hay a solicitor to the agreement submitted by the Council through their, solicitor. A lengthy discussion, took place in re* gard to the progress payments to the engineer, there being a difference of opinion amongst Councillors as to the amount to be paid Mr Hay upon the completion of the plans and specifications. It was finally deoided that the amount should be fixed at £IOOO, other payments to be made as the material was used and work completed. 1 It was deoided to telegraph to Mr Hay notifying him'of the alterations made in regard to the terms of payment, and requesting that he at onoe come to Gisborne and proeeed with the work. Councillors expressed the hopb that all possible speed would be p made with the work, which bad being banging too long. A large budget of opinions on the sub* jeot of steel pipes were read. The ' Mayor claimed that the evidenc e was overwhelmingly in i favor of eiesl pipes, while Or Lysnar said that there was no evidenoe iq favor of the spiral-rivettad pipes. • 1 The officers’ reports were read and adopted. The Overseer estimated .the bridge in Stanley road would cost £146105. Or Sheridan said the work was very Important and be' moved that the work.be gone on with. . Cr Webb aeoonded the motion, which Ce Lysnar also favored.The Mayor moved as an amendment that the matter Bland over until next meeting. Cr Whinray seconded the amendment which was carried. Tenders for metal ‘ were opened, there being eight tenders. W. Judd, Rodgers and Manson, Scragg and Co., Ballard and Co., and W. Jones tendered for 500 yar r of Pstutahi metal at 9s, making a simi 1 proviso that the metal be placed in a dewhile Gibbs and Go. tendered at 8? yard for 500 yards, D.
