The Crown mine’s return for 1966 tons of ore shows gold valued at £6079, against £4524 in July. , The Australian footballers, who arrived yesterday, left this morning for Eotorua.
Feilding, last night. In the Magistrate’s Court on Saturday J. S. Milson was charged with arson in connection with the fire on premises in Manchester street. At the conclusion, of the case for the prosecution, Mr Wilford, counsel for accused, addressed the Court, and as . the result the Magistrate dismissed the case, stating there was no evidence to put before a jury. The result was received with loud applause by the public.
Wellington, last night. Obituary : Bev. Wm. ' John Dean, Primitive Methodist, who has been stationed in various parts of tho colony, including Auckland, Invercargill, Timaru and Geraldine, aged 80. Ho arrived in the colony in 1867. Dunedin, last night. Lee Sim was arrested at Boxburgh on Saturday with 23 tins of opium in his possession. The Compensation Court awarded Henry Skey £550 in the claim brought against the Dunedin Corporation for £2IOO for land taken in connection with the extension of the water supply.

During tho nineteenth week of the New Zealand egg-laying competition 2725 eggs were laid, and the grand aggregate brought up to 27,872. The weather has been unfavorable, and for the first time the weekly average declined instead of ascending, the figures being 27,25, as against 27,69 last week, Leger’s white Leghorns are still leading with 533; Brooks’ white Leghorns second, with 494. There is another .change with respect to third place, Hockey’s brown Leghorns, from Nelson, with 415, passing Draper’s Buffs, which registered 414, The A. and P. Association’s white Leghorns tie for fourth place.
Timaru, last night. . Included in.th.6 cases set down for hearing in the Supreme' Court,, which opens here to-morrow, is the, libel action, H. D. Bedford v. J. M. Twomey, claim £I9OO. Mr Adams, Dunedin, and Mr Hill appear for plaintiff, and Mr Eeymond for defendant. The Hon Hall-Jones left here this afternoon for Wellington. Prior to leaving he received a number of deputations on local matters.
