(Per Press Association.) Timaru, Sotorday. The Dunlop road raoe started hero this morning in wrotohod weather. Heavy rain, whioh sot in yesterday morning, still ooniinnes, and the roads are in a very bad condition. Notwithstanding the adverse conditions 171 out of the 276 nominated started. The arrangements this end were all that could bo desired, everything going off Without mishap, though an immense crowd whioh assembled to see the start crowded in on the officials at times and made it diffionlt to keep a clear line for the competitors to start. Christchurch, last night.

Twenty-ffve of the competitors in the Timaru to Christohuroh Dunlop road raoe finished, the first man, P. M. O’Connor (Orioklowood), arriving at 4 47, and tho last about 6.50. The others straggled in at intervals afterwards. The roads in many plaoes were soft and muddy, and rain was falling during the greater part of the distanoo. J. Arost, tho scratch man, arrived abont 6.30. He was delayed on aooannt of the small tyres sicking into the soft roads. The prize-winners arel, P. M. O’Connor (Orioklowood), 45mins, riding time 6 hoars, 57mins ; 2, A. Hunn (Spreydon), 35, 7.12.9; 8, F. H. Bell (Fairlie), 42, 7.22.1 ; 4. G. Smith (Richardton), 50, 7.40.18 ; 5, W. A. Bennett (Highbank), 45, 7.87.25 ; 6, G. N. Longford (Temuka), 42, 7.87.48; speoial prize, H. Henderson (Palmerston North), 5, 7.7.51. With O'Connor, Henderson, Hann, O’Neilson (Daanovirke). 23, 7.17.8 ; Bell and H. Lloyd (Wanganui), 23, 7.24.25, who pnt up the six fastest time, will represent New Zealand in the GoulburnSydney and WarrnamboohMelbourne raoe in September next. The competitors were entertained in the evening at a monster smoke oonoert in the Canterbury Hail. The Mayor of Christoburoh presided, and Sir Joseph Ward and other distinguished visitors were present.
