SWAN MURDER.
THE DEATH SENTENCE PASBED. UNCONCERNED MURDERER. [(Per Press Association.) Invercargill, last night. Daniel Swan was to-day found guilty I of the murder of hia wife • on ‘2Bth June in Inveroargill, by, without warning or quarI rel, attackiog her w.ith a flat iron taken I from the fireside, and afterwards cutting I her throat with an old razor. I No witnesses were called for the defence. Aooused’s counsel, Mr Barclay, argued that the Crown bad produced no evidence that Swan cut hia wife’s throat, and sug gested sudden mania as a cause for the crime. Judge Cooper said that was matter that might be argued before a judge. The jury retired fur an hour, and returned with a verdict of guilty of wilful murder. Judge Cooper passed the doath sentence,
Swan was little, if at all agitated,and on getting into the adjoining room, asked (os he did when taken to the police station on the Dight of the tragedy) for a cigar* etto.
