Christchurch. Truth is not playing friends with one member, judging by the following :—“Mr Ell is annoyed with us. At his request we published the two questions asked by him in Parliament with respect to firewood and greenhouse work, and if we may say so, Mr Ell actually did himself disservice in making his request. We do'not understand what Mr Ell’s grievance really is, but we desire, above all, to be fair to him. He objects to our sneering and belittling remarks, presumably to our rude amusement at the extraordinarily futile things that oc- - cupy so much of his attention. We want Mr Ell to understand that we may be allowed the luxury of being amused now and then in this world of Ell’s, and Mills, and Laurenson’s, and other sad and serious circumstances, but as he no doubt would like us to keep to the point, we wish to say that we are as strongly convinced as ever that a twittering anxiety) about immaterial trifles is not politics, that we do not send him lo Parliament to inquire about lizard food, and that remarks about contortion acts in circuses are horribly expensive at £lO an hour, the cost of Parliament, and that Mr Ed makes us tired with his laborious and painful striving to do small addition sums, so to speak. Certainly, nobody could champion the bittern with greater fire than Mr Ell, but our grievance—and the questions we quoted to oblige him will make our grievance clear—is that he is simply poking in the rubbish heap of politics because it is the only place where he has no competitors.” Mr J. Malan, who has been touring the colony with the object of making a report to the Transvaal Government on our agricultural and pastoral methods, was to leave Wellington for Sydney on Saturday on his way back to South Africa. After a comprehensive tour (says the New Zealand Times), Mr Malan has come to the conclusion that Hawke’s Bay is the finest agricultural district in the colony ; but he failed to come to Gisborne.
