Christchurch Truth waxes facetious on the subject of ornamental police : The Police Commission has completed its inquiry into the condition of the police force, and sent its report to the ! Governor. Most of the recommendations that it has made, though not at the time of writing made public, can easily be guessed, inasmuch as the defects in the system were made as obvious as the boots of the men in blue, as loud and insistent as bagpipes at midnight. We are not as yet desirous of expressing an opinion on the vital recommendations of the report, but there is one item in it as forecasted in Wellington to which we wish to draw the admiring and stupefied attention of the public. This item is a recommendation that constables in the four centres undergo regular drill, with the object of improving their appearance on duty. Wc cannot help feeling pleased that an effort will be made to make the police an ornament to the landscape, but we are afraid that well-drilled and beautiful precise policemenwill be a draw-back, inasmuch as they are bound to attract such a crowd day and night that not only will the traffic be blocked, but Bill Sikes, when a-burglaring, will know the policeman is coming by the steady tramp of his army of admirers. What this country needs is not a' body of stately art exhibits, but some live and energetic and trusty men, who will catch the gleeful and care - free burglar, and who will get over his habit of arresting anybody who happens to be handy, and of considering the arrest of the cyclist as the greatest triumph of modern police art.
