At the inquost on a man named Young, drowned in the Piako river, evidence was given to the effect that decoased, who was named Percy M. Young, came from South Brisbane, whore his wife and child resido. He was a member of the Imperial Bushpian’s Contingent, and served in Africa. A verdict of accidentally drowned was returned.

Hamilton, last night. A well-known Maori chief named Kapana Patena, of Rangitikei, died suddenly yesterday of heart disease. Dunedin, last night. Mr Edmund Cook, late chief postmaster at Dunedin, died yesterday evening suddenly from a strained heart owing to over-exertion at walking. Deceased, who was 68, retired on a pension two years ago. The depositions of Bailey, the footballer injured in Saturday’s match, have been taken. He says he thinks he turned a kind of somersault, and the players fell on him. There was no rough play, and no blame was attachable to anyone. There is no change in his condition. Margaret Crossan, a widow, residing at North-east Valley, was found dead in bed yesterday morning.
