The steamer Moana did the run down from Auckland yesterday in 20 hours, the passeDgers being landod by 1.30 p.m. The fishing expedition in connection with the famous vouoher is still going strong. His Lordship Bishop Lenihan, of Auckland, is on a short visit to Poverty Bay. He returns to Auokland on Saturday. The Chief Postmaster at Christchurch is among the witnesses to be examined in connection'with the vouoher enquiry. The New Zealand representative? of the Australian boxing championships returned by the Moeraki yesterday. Breeders of.thoroughbred mares will be pleased to hear that Mr J. A. Harding has decided to keep the thoroughbred horse Mahaki in the district this year. Messrs W. Pettie and Co. announce that heavy shipments of new goods in all deI partmenta have arrived. Spring fashions, direct from London are now opening up. The directors of the 'Wellington Woollen Company recommend payment of a 8 per cent, dividend for the past six months, making 0 per cent, for the year. The Poverty Bay Caledonian Society holds a grand plain and fancy dress ball in His Majesty’s Theatre on the 14th prox. A very strong ball committee has been appointed, and the function promises to be a great success. At the Police Court yesterday George McEwan was remanded to appear at | Timaru on the 28th instant to answer to a oharge of failing to provide for bis illegitimate child. Bail was fixed at £SO, with twu sureties at £25 each. At the Central Mart on Saturday Messrs Miller and Craig will sell on behalf of the ! importers a large consignment of high | grade English bioycles. All machines are guaranteed for over 12 months. Fok assaulting the licensee of the Masonic Hotel, who had refused to supply him with liquor, Andrew McCarthy, a new arrival in the district, was fined £2 and costs at the Police Court yesterday. Sergeant MoKenzie said hotelkeepers were under severe restrictions in conducting their business, and should not be interfered with, Kia Kaha and West End • hookey dubs play at the Viotoria Domain this afternotm at 2.46. The usual fortnightly meeting of the Gisborne Tent of Roohabites was held last evening, Bro. H. Lord, Chief Buler, presiding. There was a good attendance of members, arid a large amount of business was transacted. It was decided to hold a I social evening at the next meeting, a limelight exhibition being the chief attraction, at whioh meeting it is hoped to form a nuoleus of a social fund. I
Messrs Bichordson and Co., the wellknown piano importing firm of Auckland, are at present showing a very handsome Horace G. Brinsmead instrument at the
" Beehive,” to which attention is invited. The piano, which is sold at £9O on time payments for three.years without interest, is an exceptionally fine instrument, and should he easily disposed of. Mr A. H. Light, who represents the firm, has several fine instruments at Mrs Biee’s residence in Clifford street, Whataupoko. He invites inspection of the same. In the bye-law case yesterday his Worship pointed out that the bye-law fixed the penalty at £5, and it was questionable if he had power to reduce. Mr Lysnar said J the words of the bye-law were that an offender rendered himself ‘‘liable to” a fine of £5, and he did not think that the Magistrate was bound to fine defendant £5. If, added defendant’s counsel, his I Worship made the penalty less he would not afterwards question his authority on I this point. Mr Stook stated he did not press for a heavy penalty, as the case was J wrought as a warning. His Worship then I fixed the fine at 10b.
Mr Donne, head- of the Tourist and Commerce Department, returned to Wellington yesterdav from a visit to Amerioa and Great Britaio. The main objeot of his trip was to seoure the co-operation of American, British, and Continental manufacturers in the carrying out of the international exhibition atOhristohuroh. Interviewed by a Post reporter, Mr Donne declined to give details of the amount of success he had met with, but,: generally f speaking, said he has every confidence | that the representation will be thoroughly i characteristic of all countries through whioh he has travelled. He iB greatly impressed with the desirableness of further advertising the colony abroad, and thinks the present a favorable time for offering facilities to British farm folk to come to the colony, owing to a shortage of lands in Great Britain for the rising generation. He has definite recommendations to make ta the Government on this point.

A romarkablo case was doalt with at the Police Oouft yestorday. A man named Alfrod John Power had boon given a ohanoo by the authorities to leave the town and sook work in the country, He kept his promise to leave town, but only got out as far as tho Park Raoeoourse, where ho took up quarters as if he had recently purchased the property. Ho seoured a key, looked himself in,and defied the caretaker., Tho police were oalled in and gave Power lodgings in town prior to bis appearing bofore Mr Barton. An adjournment was made to look into the man’s antecedents, and as they were not favorable to him he was given six months’ gaol for vagrancy.
Mr G. K. Miller, who for the past seven years has been connected with Mr Darcy Ford’s establishment, Willis Street, is
about to enter into business a 9 an auc--tionoer at Gisborne, says the New Zealand Times, In view of his approaching departure, ho was last night entertained at supper at tho Cafe Cecil. Duriog the evening Mr Ford presented the guest with a souvenir and a oheque from himself and staff. Mr Milter will enter into partership with Mr M. Craig, aeon of Mr J. Craig, of Gisborne, and the business will be oarried on undor the style of Messrs Miller and Craig. Both members of tho firm are well known throughout the diatriofc and they should sooure a large share of publio patronage. Messrs Miller and Craig take over the Central Mart to-morrow.
