" ■ SUHANGAHat- J SE'rtHfl Onr Own Correspcmdent.J August 17. An interesting and instructive lecture on the Japanese:- and their country was gratuitously given by the Tiev. lllr Chatterton in the Pakarae hall on Monday evening last. The; lecture, which was given from personal observation was graphically illustrated by a-number of lantern views, which v were in themselves well worth seeing. 1 Inopening, the lecturer incidentally referred to the aboriginal race which occupied the country before the advent of the Japanese, of whom, there are still a few' thousands in. existence. The rev. gentleman then, gave his audience an. entertaining description of the domestic, social, commercial and religious life of the Japanese, and when speaking of the rapid progress made by Japan in, later years .referred t to a few of the most prominent political ! eyents, which were the' means of instigating the Japanese to supreme efforts, whereby they 00/uld place themselves in a position ta hold their own. Just before closing his- remarks the lecturer, in drawing fi comparison between the Japanese e.nd Chinese made reference to .the much-talkod of yellow peril. The speaker expressed the ’ opinion that owing, to the want of cohesion'on the part of the Cliinese as & people practically the 80-ca.Ued peril does not exist. . ; " .

Mr Chattarton was accorded a vota of thanks at the instance of fir J. R. Shaw for his able lecture, which was heartily responded to. . ,
