VOLCANIC ERUPTION.
OUTBREAK IN SAMOAN GROUP. GREAT VOLUME OF FLAME SHOOTS UP. (Pei Press Association.') Auckland, last night.. News of the second volcanic eruption in the island of Savan, in the Samoan Group, was received by the Union Coy’s island trader Navua. , . Captain McLean states that when tnat vessel arrived at Apia, in the island of Upolulu, on the night of the 7th inst., a great vo'nme of flame suddenly shot up into the air, and as the crater on Savau island, about 40 miles distant, had been aotive some three years previously, it was conjectured that it was there the eruption was taking place. This proved to be correct. The volcano continued aotive throughout the 7th and Btb, and when the Navua sailed the following evening it was still belching forth smoko and flames. The officers and passengers of the Navua had a splendid opportunity of seeing the display. There are about 2000 natives and a number of w&ite traders on the island, but there is believed to be no casualties.
