Napier, last night. Mr George Faulkner, one of Napior’s early settlers, who has been in business here as coaohbuilder ‘for nearly 40 years, died to-day. Deceased was for many years a member of the Borough Council, and of the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, of whioh bodies be was ' for some years treasurer. He was also one of the founders of, and a trustee of, the Napier Working Men’s Club. In private, as well as in publio life, ho was greatly respected, and has many friends in all parts of the colony. The Borough Council adjournedtheir meeting to-night out of respect to the memory of the deoeased.

Christchurob, last night. The North Canterbury Education Board has [doeided to convene a conference of members of Education Boards to be held at Wellington on September 11th for the purpose of discussing and giving united expression to the desirability oi alterations and amendments in the administration of the primary education system, In reply to the Board’s enquiry whether restrictions.placed on Education Boards regarding expenditure of building grants are unnecessary and calculated to hamper them in the endeavor to meet j varying needs in their respeotive districts, the Hawke’s Bay, Otago, Nelson, South Canterbury, Southland, and Wellington Boards have written endorsing the views of the North Canterbury Board, and expressing their willingness to join the Board in any aotion taken towards restoration of powers previously possessed by Boards. The Weßtland Board replied that as the needs in regard to new buiidinga had been I very small and had been uniformly provided by the Department, the Board had no reason to offer objections to the existing conditions, though the Board oould understand that in larger districts the re- I strictions might prove irksome.
