Xu tho Supremo Court William iaylor, a prominent resident of Aliuroa, was found not guilty on a charge of stealing two Lulls. Tlio judgo and jury oxprossod strong disapproval of tho arrest of a well-known settler, when ho could liavo boon dealt with by summons, there being not the slightest chance of him going away.. A fisherman named William Koid, previously charged with assault on Mary Donovan by catching her eby the throat, was to-day charged with tho major crime of attempted, murder, x o facts alleged wore that accused, who kept the woman on a fishing-boat, was drinking hard with others on Sunday last, and in a row on board seized her by the throat and throw her overboard. Sho screamed, and police assistance was at onco forthcoming. Accused denied tho charge, and said ho know nothiug about it. The woman was drunk and fell ovorboard while crossing ovor to another boat, tied to his own. Tho case was adjourned till Friday to enable ([accused to got further ovidonco, bail being refused. Wuiroa, yeßtorday. Before Mr Barton, S.M., J. |H. Buckland and J. Oldham, for exposing sheep for sale affected with lice, were fined £ 1 and 7s costs. A. .Knox, licensee of Waikaro hotel, was lined £l6 and costs (j£3 16s) for - breaches of the Licensing Act by permitting drunkenness on licensed premises and selling liquor to Gurdot iSingh while intoxicated. The license was endorsed. Two other charges were withdrawn.
