Point Elizabeth coal had I gone off greatly during the past six I months. There was too groat a proportion lof slack in it, and it was too light for I heavy railway work. Ho desired to emphasise the mistake of sending out unsoreoned coal. It oame out during the hearing that screens are now being erected 'at Point Elizabeth mine. William Soott, railway foreman, also insisted on the importance of Bcreeniog coal. In its nDsoreened state 25 per cent and more of Point Elizabeth ooal had to be consumed than of Brunner or Westport. A number of reports were submitted in writing from tho railway officers. Mr Alex MoDougall gave evidenoe regarding short supplies and short hours.
