Frederick Simmonds, married, ngod 45 years, died last night in a padded cell at Mount Edeu gaol. He had boon romandsd on a charge of druukenmss, and suddenly beoamo violent, throwiog utensils about. He was placed in a padded cell and a doctor summoned, who found Simmonds in a state of collapse. Artificial respiration was tried, but war unsuccessful, Tho doctor pronounced lifo to bo extinct, His wife lives iu Noithern Wairoa, Dunodin, last night.

Early this morning tho railway station at Kaiapoi was bruken into and tho safe dynamited. Burglars had drawn a luggage fcarrow to tho window under the platform verandah, and broke two panes of glass on each aicio of tho fastener, and thus gained an entrance. The thieves stole £l9, £5 of which was in oheques. The nearest house was some chains away. An explosion was heard st about 2 a,m., and the noiso of a vehiolo bciug driven through tho town in the oarly morning, but Ihe burglary was not suspected and no alarm was givou. Mr A. R.
