The weather experienced in Gisborne during the past week has been the severest for some years, and reports from oountry districts are to the same effect, great damage being done to roads and stock. On Saturday and yesterday a strong southerly gale prevailed, and shipping was at a standstill. The Mararoa arrived from

i the South on Saturday morning, and after waiting for several hours it was found impossible to communicate, and the steamer passed on to Auckland, arriving there at 8,45 a.m. yesterday. * Tho Taluno arrived from Auckland at 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon, after a run of eight hours from the East Oape. It was impossible to tender tho steamer, whose departure for tho South was postponed until 9 o’clock this morniDg. Tho rainfull during the past ten days ha 3 been exceptionally heavy, close on nino inches being recorded. Tho whole of the flats are more or less under water, and unless there is an improvement in the weather conditions during the present week it is feared that great damage will result to stock. Throughout the district the rivers were in high flood, and there has been great damage to the roads. On Saturday and yesterday a very heavy I sea was running in the bay, and a considerable amount of damage was done to the groyne. A heavy slip has occurred on the Morere road, a few miles beyond Murewai. Railway communication to Karaka has been interfered with owing to a heavy fall of earth at Scott’s cutting. It is expected that it will take two or three days to clear the line, and pending this being done the railway authorities have arranged for coacheß to connect at Kaiteratahi,
