The Gisborne Times PUBLISHED EVERY MORNING. GISBORNE, AUG. 1, 1905. THE NEW PARTY.
The electors are not likely to feel very, proud. of. 'the new party of which sudlii fuss was made by Opposition; papers. They comprise a nmr.’ber of clever, men, with a grand opportunity. Trenchant/ criticism is always desirable in the interests of the country. 1 •- It is very necessary at the present juncture when there , is in power a strong and sclid party 1 that is tempted to. carry things in a hugh-li'anded manner. 'But could there be anything hut a blush o; shame for the tactics of those who •seek to found a refutation on mall jgnant attacks on tlio Premier, who, 1 whatever his faults may be, Mas always proved a straightforward, and • honorable lighter, hittin'g hand at times, hut never unfairly. When Sir 'Fisher was elected, in all sincerity, wo offered him our heartiest congratulations. Now we have to express our sorrow -that one endowed with such ability should have taken part in the pitiable, exhibition of Saturday miorniiiJg. . It is a sorrowful thing that the privileges of Parliament should he so abused. When a lively, session was predicted, we looked forward to spirited (debates, with a searching criticism of the Government's policy and administration. instead of which there has been simply a throwing of mud and bitter personal attacks. An especially disp.lcasin'g feature of the debate, .or rather- mutid-si inging, is the distrust generated in a very important branch of the public service. The information disclosed is pephan.s not soriqus, but it is of great moment that confidential messages should ho divulged in til is manner. It may well he asked, if members of the Government cannot rely on confidential messages being kept secret, howi the public can expect to. faro in ordinary matters of 'business in which it is essential for i •■the parties interested jt-o keep, their i pwri counsel* •
