GISBORNE POULTRY FANCIERS’ CLUB.

ANNUAL SHOW. A RECORD ATTENDANCE

Tho annual show of the Gisborne Poultry Fanciers’ Club was opened at the Theatre Eoyal yosterday, and was in every sense an unqualified success. Excellent arrangements had been made by the committee, and the good work done by the secretaries, Messrs Morrison and Porter, was tho subject of muoh favorable comment. Judging wsb commenced at 9 o’clock sharp, and as usual a number of late comers were shut out, although the fault was entirely their own, ns the time for receiving entries had been well advertised. The judge, Mr A. S. Palmer, is to bo heartily congratulated on the successful manner in which he perfom ed his duties, there not being a single complaint from exhibitors, a fact seldom observed at exhibitions of any kind, and more especially poultry shows. The Government grader, Mr Ponnsford, was tho life and soul of the show, and either at pluokiog fowls or disposing of oake it would be hard to find his equal. The killing and pluckiDg exhibition was one of tho most interesting functions witnessed fn Gisborne for a long time. The expert would taka a live fowl from a box, and in a minute and a quarter it would be lying, beautifully plucked, on tho stage. We arc informed that at Wanganui reoontly Mr Ponnsford killed and plucked a bird in 58 seoonds. His exhibition alone Bhould attraot a crowded attendance this afternoon and ovening. The sale of the prize cake eausod a great deal of esoitement and ais one part of it was disposed of at a far quicker rate than it could be out. The sum of .£2 10s was mixed with the cake, and amongßt those who obtained a half sovereign for sixponoe were a woll-snown importer of boots of a dependable ’brand and a lady visitor. Quite a large number of half-crowns, shillings, and sixpences were obtained by otber purchasers. Although the olub did not benefit financially by the innovation, they have decided to repeat the performance this evening. The City Band was present during the evening, and considerably enlivened the proceedings with a number of popular selections

Referring to the show of birds, the number of exhibits was well up to previous years, and the quality showed a considerable improvement. The special feature of the show was, of course, the exhibits of Indian game, for which championship honors for the North Island were offered. Competition was remarkably keen, and some of the prize winners could not haye been beaten in New Zealand. Mr Porter took the championship with a beautiful hen, which was shown in excellent condition, and attracted the attention of all fanciers. Mr Harry Williams, one-of the dab’s oldesrand most enthusiastic members, took first and special in olass 13 for the best game cock, his exhibit being greatly admired. Dorkings were few in number, but the quality waa good. Orpingtons were a fairly large elass, and competition WO3 keen. Mr J. Walker Bain was the largest prize-taker, his birds being shown in : excellent condition. In bull Orpingtons, Mr G. R. Hutchinson, of Auckland, fairly swept the board. As usual Mr G. R. Mooro was to the fore in Langshans, although the judge said there was room lor improvement in this class. Only a few Plymouth Rocke wore shown and the quality was not up to previous shows. The Wyandottes were a feature of the show and chief honors went to Mr O. F. Humphreys, who showed several fine exhibits, Messrs G. B. Moore and H. Sandlant same out on top in the Minoreas, the judge being well pleased with the exhibits. Leghorns brought forth keen competition, Mr Gault's birds being specially deserving of mention. Mr TMorrison, with a number of very fine Hamburgs, accounted for most of the prizes in these classes, Some excellent exhibits of ducks were ehown by Messrs W. T. Raymond, W. J. Hennessy.and Mrs F. J. Pearson.the latter also showing some fine turkeys. Pigeons were not well represented, especially considering the good prizes offered by the Society for the several classes- Included in the exhibits for exhibition oply was a fine lot of fowls from Mr J. Walker of Auckland, and these will be offered for sale by Mr Raymond on Monday next. Messrs Dalgety and 00. exhibited a pen of fowls and a pen of dneka and also a " Prairie State” inoubafcor, the working of which was carried on by Mr W. J, Rsmgar. Great interest was taken in the hatching of the chickens. One drawback to the euccess of the show last evening was the poor lighting, The gas at times was so bad that one oonld not see the birds in the cages. The committee are making arrangements to have this remedied to-day, and visitors to the show this evening oan rest assured that everything wiii be alright on this soore. We are asked by the committee to state that dressed poultry in large or email quantities will be on sale at the show today. PRIZE LIST. Game—Black or brown red : Oookerel» D. Moore I.
