LOCOMOTIVE CONTRACT.

Thames, last night. Regarding the protest of the Christchurch branch of the Trades and Council as to an order for two additional locomotives placed with Price Bros., Thames, and the possession of the drawings, tha facts aro : Plans and drawings were essential to the completion of a contract for ton locomotives by Price Bros, before the contract time elapsed. Had any other firm been successful, the tenderer must of necessity have boon in possession of similar plans and drawings. Apparently it was impossible to have had twenty loeomotivos, the number required, completed in the Government workshops in time. The desired ten were ordered in the Government workshops, and a tender called for the other tea. The private tender was completed well within the contract time, and loDg before the Government workshops burned out a similar number.
