The Gisborne Times PUBLISHED EVERY MORNING. GISBORNE. JULY 20, 1905. A GISBORNE PARK.
The proposal made by Cr Slier id an at the last meeting ol' the Borough Gduncil that an effort ho made to secure as a ptujblic reserve this already popular. resort, is deserving o£ favorable consideration. At the present rate of progress prophecy is vai'a hut tve may reasonably, expect, from the strides now being, made, that within ten years the population will have increased to leu thousand, and the laek.of some public.park of a sufficiently large area will be keenly feltj. Tlxo domains, jpaxks and open reserves of larger centres have been aptly termed ?' the lungs of. the cities,” and we,are pleased tq. see ith_at Cr Sheridan’s resolution met with the unanimous support, of .the .'Council. The Park is admirably adapted for a recreation grofUMd.,, botanical gardens, ancl pleasure resor.tlt is within easy access of the town, anil has the all-important essential lof sufficiency of area. .We understand the Company have placed the property under offer to the Racing Club for £6OOO, and if the Club decides'to accept, the prospect of the borough being able to acquire the property, would apparently he remote. On the other hand, however,, if. the Club would strengthen that po~ i pularity which they at present enjoy, anil which is a very important! factor of their success, they may bo far-seeing enough to facilitate the vest aig of the property in the people It is true the Borough is already nominally possessed of the Makaraka Domain, but nobody would urge the suitability of the Domain as against the Park, and doubtless, if necessary, the former could .bo disposed of, and the proceeds used to make up. the purchase money of the •Park, Prom, a strictly business point of view, anil apart from all sentimentality, the purchase would be a sound investment for the borough. as the assured net returns, even at the present time, would more than pay the Interest, on the whole purchase money, anil the property is so situated that every; year it will become more valuable. IS the Committee set up are able to get the property under offer, anil 1 wp are confident that Crs Sheridan, Lysnar, and Bright wilt leave no Slone unturned, ‘there should be no i". cubic in obtaining the consent of the Ratepayers to the raising of the small loan for so laudable an object, more especially when the purchase will result in a net annual prolit, instead of, as in most cases, an increase of taxation. We trust the bodies interested will not fail -to display that public spjritedness, ■which in the past we are proud tc say' has characterised Gisborne societies. Should the Council be space? sfu! in the acquisition of the Pro.petty at the price mentioned, there is no doubt they will earn the gratitude ' of-the whole of - the ‘inhabitants of the district ‘‘and fixture generations will call them blessed,”'

If Mr Hut chison does stand for 'Waiapu, the fight will become a very interesting one, the exmember being an able speaker and a clever tactician.
