LONDON WOOL SALES. By gohigrapE, Press Asa’o, CDpyeigftt . London, July 16. 1 The quantity of wool catalogued to data totals 121,000 bales. There have beeneoitV' to Home buyers 68,000 bales, the Continenttaking 39,000, and America 7000, and there are held over 11,000 bales. Compared with May closing rates, all merinos advanced 71 to 10 per cent., and shabby crossbreds 10'per cent. Choice crossbreds suitable for America declined 5 per cent. Americans took the best wools. Richmond clip sold at 10j£d, Ngakomri 12£d. Hides are firm; Queensland to 711. Leather has advanced £dNew Zealand frozen meat: Canterbury mutton, light 4£d. medium 4£d, heavy 4d;; beef, ox forequarters 25-16 d. River Plate : Sheep, heavy 3)4d, light 3 7-16 d; beef,, forequarters 23-16 d.

HIGH COMMISSIONER’S REPORT.

<Fer Press Association.} Wellington, last night. The Department of Industries and Commerce has received the following cablegram from tho High Commissioner, dated London, 12th :— 11 Mutton market quiet. Light weights are getting very scarce. Holders are firm. The average price to-day for Canterbury mutton (light weights) is 4£d, for other North Island mutton 4£d, for Canterbury brand (heavy, weights) and for other North Island mutton 3 5-8 d per lb. The lamb market is weaker, with a downward tendency. Light weights are extremely scarce, the market for which is firm. The average price to-day of New Zealand lamb, Canterbury brand, is 5Jd to 5 3-Bd. Heavy weights and brands other than Canterbury 5 3-Bd. The weather has been unfavorable fqr the sale of wheat. The supply exceeds the demand. There is no change in priceß since last report. The butter market is quiet bat firm. There has been no change in prices since last report. The cheese market is steady. • The demand is only moderate. The average price to-day of finest New Zealaud ,cheese is 55s for white and 53s colored. The hemp market is qniet. A small business is doing. The price of New Zealand hemp, good fair Wellington grade, on spot), io day per ton is £26 10s, August and Bep-«W tember shipments £2B. The Manila hemp\™ market is very firm owing to Americana buying. The price of Manila hemp is £3B. Wheat on spot is extremely scarce. There ■ is a general and active demand for wheat

to arrive before the end of the month. The English crop is very encouraging.”.'

The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company have received the following cable from London : “ Market closed strong for wool. As compared with last sale’s closing rates, prices are 5 to 7£ per cent, higher for crossbred slipe, merino and scoured crossbred. About 7i to 10 per cent, higher for coarse greasy crossbred. Decreased American demand for crossbred. For medium greasy crossbred the market is easier, also for fine greasy crossbred. Average ourrent London value of the undernotod descriptions of New Zealand wool: Gr 01 merino 14d, modinmjdo. 12} d 3 inferior do. lOd, fino crossbred 121 d, medium do. lid, coarse do., 40’a, lOd, coarse do., 36’s, 91d.”

The following cable message has been received from the London office of tha British-New Zealand Meat and Produce Company :—The mutton market has on improving tendency; prime Canterbury wethers and maiden ewes, 481 b to 561 b 44d 561 b to 641 b 4*d, 641 b to 721 b 4d : North Island mutton, 481 b to SGIb 4£d, 561 b to 641 b Sgd, 641 bto 721 b 3rd. The lamb market is depressed, and trade is slow * prime Canterbury, 281 b to 36!b 5Jd ; North Island, 28!b to 36!b 3£d, 361 b to 421 b 51-d Beef : Prom 1801 b to 2001 b, hindquartcra ■is 6d per stone, forequarters is 7d per stone ; beef is dull of sale at low prioes owing to large supplies from the Argentina ana other sources.
