(Per Press Association'.! Blenheim, last night. During the eleventh week of the New Zealand egg-laying competition 1760 eggs wore laid, and the grand aggregate increased to 8847, The weekly average now stands at 17 3-5 eggs per pen. H. Leger’s white Leghorns from Levin are still in the lead with 284, F. Brooks’ditto from South Australia second with 278, Mogridge’s buff Orpingtons (Blenheim) third with 209. There is now only one non-contributing pen.
In a junior football match on Saturday a lad named Register broke his leg, as tho result of a collision with a player who was kicking a ball at tho same time.
LATE FATHER BENEDICT-
St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Auckland was crowded on Thursday lasi,when the funeral of the late Reverend Father Benediot, O.P. took .place. At nine o’clock Pontificial and requiem mass was sung by Bishop Leniban. Tho Bishop was assisted by Monsignor O’Reilly as assistant priest, Dean Haekott as deacon, Father Brodie as sub-deacon, and Fathers Gillan and Holbrook as masters of ceremony. There were also present : Fathers Mahoney, J. Keboe, T. Keboe.Egan, Buckley,Darby, Cochran, Meagher, D. McMillan, A. McMillan, Zanana, Cahill, Dignan, Edge, and the Marist Brotherhood of the City. The music of the mass was rendered in a most impressive manner by a full choir, tho soloists being Messrs Mantell and Casior. At tho conclusion of the mass Father Gillan briefly addressed the congregation, and exhorted those present to daily pray for the soul of the dead. Bishop Lsnihan then read the last absolution, and the earthly remains of the late reverend Father were solemnly borne from the church to the cemetery. About 300 children from the Crtbolie schools joined in the cortege and marched as far as Pitt
street. On arrival at the Panmare cemetery a procession of clergy and laity followed the body to tho grave. After Bishop Leniban , had read the last prayers for the dead he I addressed the vaßt concourse of people in feeling terms and read a letter written by the late Father Benedict, which was en- | closed in bis will, in which ha expressed I his gratitude to the Bishop and the clergy for all the kindness shown to him while in New Zealand. Tho coffin was then placed ! in the grave at the side of tho remains of the late Monsignor Walter McDonald. Father Furloog, of Gisborne,and Father i Keogh, rector of St. Patrick’s College, .
