The Gisborne Times PUBLISHED EVERY MORNING. GISBORNE, JULY 14, 1905. POLITICAL MATTERS.
■A few. days ago it was tlio, ugh : tl I'he political atmosphere had cleared up, and that the electors wood'd be gitveu plenty of time to consider the merits of the rival candidates. Now, 'the position of things is not at all clear. Mr Stevens has decided to withdraw from the contest, a decision that will be endorsed by. alt his best friends. Mis courage, however, must command the admiration of all whose opinion is- worthy of consideration. A candidate who could face a hostile audience in a mood of frivolity as Mr Stevens' did on Wednesday night, is possessed of no ordinary courage, and his manner of retiring from the contest shows the straightforward disposition of the candidate. Mr Stevens lias saddled our politics and- has formed unisfbakeahie opinions on many points, but he lacks that platform "training which enables some men. to say. much, that nieanetli'little. Had Mr Stevens the power, to say on the stage in face of an audience bent more on fun than serious attention to the great questions of the day what he could convincingly say in quiet conversation, ho ‘would have converted many of the hostile forces! into enthusiastic supporters. Or flic other .Opposition c andidates it is premature to say anything at present. It is pleasing to-see men like Messrs Lissant Clayton and l-I, H, Wall offering their services' to the electors,-and though we put our faith in the J. Carroll as far and away the best representative of the district, still wq must admit that either of the gentlemen named would put up a good light with the popular sitting member, who is one of a Ministry that seems likely to remain in power for many years to come. We are sure that Mr Carroll if called upon to contest the seat, will welcome as worthy opponents both of tilts' gentlemen named. They ■would start with a heavy handicap in entering, the lists against the Native Minister, but would have an advantage In getting to work while Mr Carroll is detained at Wellington attending to Ilia State duties.
