At the Holy Trinity Church last evening Mr Percy Denton sang “ Abide with Ms.” There was a large attendance, the service being oonduotod by the Kev. Dawson Thomas.
At the meeting of the A. and P. Association i Committee qn Saturday, Mr W. 801 l was elected to the vacanoy on the Committee, ae recommended by the annual meeting. At the Technical school this evening the second quarter of the plumbing olasses commences, and it hoped that advantage will be taken of them by all young men engagod in the trade. On Saturday Mr Q. K. Pasley received advice from the secretary of the Education Board that application has been made to the Education Department for a grant to purChaao the land offered for salo, and a reply received stales that the matter would be considered.
The racehorse Flog waßaold by auotion on Saturday by Messrs Williams and Kettlo for thiriy-oix guineas, the purchaser being Mr P. Malone. Mr W. Martin secured Tukapa for. twenty-six guineas, whilst fifty guineas were ottered for Roseplot, and twenty-six for Artilleryman. No offer was made for Anxiety. Mr G. R, Wyliio conduotod tho sale. .
Mr Howes, again’ occupied Townley's Hall, a largo audience being present. The lecturer treated his oubjeot, " Spiritualism and the Democracy,” in an able manner, contending that Spiritualism appealed to all clneses of people, and stood in tho front rank in all social reform amongst working clusses.
,At a largely attended meeting held on Saturday, it was decided to revive the Poverty' Bay Hunt Club. Mr W. Hutchinson, who presided, stated they had got through last season without very much sport, but this year they had had seven kills with nine bounds. It was decided to make the subscription two guineas. The following oomomtee was-olected : Messrs VV. Hutchinson, F. Pattullo, J. M. Gouldsmitb, A. R, Hine, G. Reynolds, 0. White, J. A. Harding, R. The necessity for bettor telephone facilities in town and country was discussed by the Gisborne brunch of the Farmers’ Union on Saturday, and resolutions were forwarded to the Chief Postmaster on the question. Tho Chairman (Mr W. D. Lysnar) said for some time the country bureaus -had boon very congested with work, so much so that persons, could not make proper use of the telephone-- One would go to a telephone and have_ to wait for an hour before ho could obtain communication with Gisborne. He did not make „any complaint regarding the local Btafif or bureaus officers, as he was sure they did their beet to get through the work as speedily as possible. The difficulty oould-be gotjover in a measure by duplicating the lines, aud this should be done. A person travelling in the country could not wait half an hour or an hour for the telephone to be clear, and that was generally the case throughout tho district. A firm in Gisborne were two days trying to ring up the Coast, and at last bad to telegraph. An extension of the hours on holidays and Sundays was also necessary, as well as an all-night service in town. After a lengthy djsousslon the following resolution was adopted on the motion of Mr Caesar, seconded by Mr Kenway : “ That the Postal and Selß graph Department be requested, considering the large amount of business transacted through the local telephone offiee, to make arrangements to extend the time of olosing bureaux until 10 p.m., and to appoint an all day and night service in towD. It was further decided fo send tho resolution to the County and Borough Councils for their consideration, also to the chief pastmaster, Gisborne,, to forward on to tho Department.
