Replying to a deputation of Rand miners, asking for protection against Chinese, Lord Selborno replied that the bad language Chinese used against the whites appeared to be the Bole cause of the trouble Although 40,000 Chinese were employed, there were only 20 cases of. assault in the year, 14 occurring in two' mines and six in 26 mines. He nrged the whites to refrain from drink and bad language, thus setting a good example.
