Armstrong and Noble opened the attack. Seven mou were placed on tbo on-side for Armstrong. The first four overs produced a 6ingle. At 34 Laver relieved Armstrong. Fry was making some capital hits, scoring ten off one of Noble’s overs. Fifty went up aftor 55 minutes’ piay, when McLeod took the ball from Noble, and tbe desired separation brought about,Fry giving Noble &u easy chance ao point. Some quiet play followed, the bowling being too good to permit of any liberties being taken. Hayward, after a skilful itmiugs of 1 hour 40inins, in trying to play McLeod played him on. Four for 64.
Jackson and Hirst carried the game to the luncheon adjournment, when the score stood at four wickets f. r SB.. Hirst np to that time had been doing some clean bitting. On resuming Armstrong and McLeod were bowling, and within 15 minutes Hirst, with a fioe drive for four, caused 100 to appear. Both batsmen were playing steadily, until Hirst sont one up to squro-leg, and Trumper making a fine runs secured Tit. . Hirst had batted 70 minutes, and gave a good display, and hit off six fourere. Five for 133. Bosanquen opened with a four drive off Hopkins. Jackson was scoring Bteadily, and put 50 to bis credit after being at the wickets for 100 minutes. Ho then opened out to Laver, and bit to leg for four, and the next ball was cut by him for a similar number. At this time there were fully 20,000 people present. Bosanquet was bowled by Duff, the telegraph showing Six for 201. Lilley • just succeeded in getting into double figures, when he foil a victim to Noble. Seven for 232. After nine singles Jackson, with a two off Noble, brought up his century as the result of 2£ hours’ splendid play. This achievement was greetod with cheering. When his score was 130 Jackson gave Kelly an easy ohanee of stumping him, but it was not accepted,and a little later Haigh was easily caught by Noble at short-leg oS Armstrong. The partnership had lasted 50 minutes. Eight for 282. Warren filled the gap, and Jackeon.with a cut for four sent up the 290 at 6.30 p.m, Warren was run out owing to a misunderstanding. He gave his wicket away. Nino for 301. Blythe, the last mpn, succumbed first ball just on time, Jackson carrying out his bat for 144, which inoluded eighteen f outers.
