GAMBLING MANIA.
Per Press Association. Auckland, last night. A well-attended conference of representative citizens, convened by the Ministers’ Association, was held for the purpose of I discussing , the disastrous effects on the community produced by the evils of betting J and gambling, and the pernicious influ encea of the totalisator. The Mayor wai present. The following resolution wai carried : “ That this conference; deplores the widespread evil of the gambling anc betting practices;of the present day, and is of opinion that more earnest efforts should be made to combat this glaring evil.” It was also moved that the Governmental licensing of gambling through the 'totalisator should ‘ be made a test question for politicians at the forthcoming elections. Mr Speight said what was wanted was a monster petition in favor of its abolition. He had not much faith in’ questions to Parliamentary candidates. They should appe d to the whole people. Pacing bad ceased to be a sport, ond had become a gamblp. The motion having been altered in accordance with Mr Speight’s suggestion was carried. A committee was appointed to take immediate steps to bring the: matter I prominently before the notice of the public. 1
