(Per Press Association.) Auckland, last night. Tho Mayor of Auckland, Mr A. Myors, turned on the new triple expansion engine at the electric tramway works yesterday. Extra power has been rendered, neceasary by the large increase in the traffio. Chief Inspector Petrie, in an exhaustive report to the Education Board, declares that tho school staffs arc inadequate to sccuro proper combination, efficiency, and working. Tho strain for efficiency too often is accompanied by a breakdown of the teacher’s health. Ho recommends one teacher for the average attendance up to 30, teacher and pupil teacher up to 45, teacher and mistress up to 80, and thereafter pupil teacher ana assistant teacher alternately for every inoroa6Q of 20 and 40 pupils ro3poctively. He recommends that pupil teachers should complete service in the schools in which they begin, so that all teachers shall have a fair share of beginners except under special circumstances. Ho remarks on the dearth of pupil teaohers, which his recommendation would remedy, and saya it is apparent that the last Education Commission erred in denying pupil teachers to schools below an average of 91.
