CHARGE AGAINST AN INSPECTOR

Auckland, last night. A very unusual prosecution for alleged oruelty came before Mr Kettle, S.M., in the Police Court this morning, the dofend- . an t being Levy Alder, local inspector of V the Society for tbe Prevention of Cruelty 1 to Animals. Ho was charged with having It- slaughtered a horse on June 16th in the city pound in such a manner as to oause it unnecessary pain. He pleaded not «uilty. It appears that Alder, in order to put the animal ont of its misery, struck it V on the head with a hammer three times, and left it for dead. The evidence of ■witnesses, however, indicated that the was not killed, but was struggling /' | -isarly two hours afterwards. The Jl dismissed in view of the fact that tK&lvjyas no intention of cruelty.
