A deputation of representatives of churches and the Association of Public Morals, in urging upon tho Chief Secretory corrective legislation in, connection with liquor, opium, social evils, Sunday trading, and danciDg, among other startling statements alleged that j£30,000 weekly is passed through Sydney tote shops ; that £20,000,000 is locked up in gambling in Australia ; and that over 2000 girls are plying the streets of Sydney. Mr Hogue, in promising sympathetic consideration, expressed the belief that Sydney was no worse than any other large city.
