Mr Carruthera states that the financial year shows that not only has £200,000 been paid off the public! debt, but that there is a handsome surplus.
Melbourne, June 24. . r* _ ttom states that everything possible is being done to secure the defences being in an efficient state. The Council of Defence is formulating a scheme for submission to the Government. The forces arß fully oquipped with small arms, arid the reserve of arms and ammunition is in a satisfactory condition. The rearming of the field artillery is proceeding. E?xed defences at Fremantle will bo provided for.
