MONTHLY MEETING.

The monthly moefcing of the Gisboruo Borough Council was hold last ovening, when tho following members woro prosent His Worship tho Mayor (Mr J. Towulov), Crs Harding, Rocs, Bright, Whinray, Wobb, Lvsoar and Colloy. SPECIAL ORDERS.

Special orders in connection with tho Water Works loan and Council's balauco ■hoot woro approved of. CORRESPONDENCE.

Messrs Murray, Roberts and Co. wroto dr a win" attention to poplar trees adjacent to tbeirhuilding ia Custom House street, and asking that they bo allowed to rornovo them. , , . On tho motion of Cr Harding, seconded by Cr Btight-, tho permission esked for was granted. STEEL TvIVETTED PIPES.

Messrs Sogar Bros., Auckland, wroto re s'eol rivetted pipes, asking for a copy of tho goneral conditions of ttio contrset for laying down the pipes and tho kind required. They mentioned that they rondo 7 miles of stool riveted pipes, loin diameter, for tho Auckland City Council auxiliary water supply iu 1901. Councillors expressed approval of the information contained in tho lsttor. The commenicahon was received. MR HAY’S VISIT.

A telegram was read from MrHny, stating that ho would arrivo in Gisborne on Wednesday morning. - Cr Wobb stated that ho hoped* that Mr Hay would not bo buttonholed by C-r Lysnar, the Mayor or any other Councillors and hound to a certain proposal before meeting tho Council. Tho Mayor said that Father Hayes was coming by tho samo steamer. He understood that tho Council would mako an appointment to meet Mr Hay and go fully into the question of a water supply for Gisborne. Cr Harding said that ho woald bo on board tho steamer and would bavo tho first word with Mr Hay. (Laughter.) 1 On tho motion of Cr Bright it was deeided that tho Council should meet MiHay at three o’cloeb this (Tuesday) afternoon.

GISBORNE-ROTORUA RAILWAY. W. Lissant Clayton wrot3 on behalf of thß Poverty Bay Executive of the Farmors’ Union, askiDg for the co operation of the Borough in urging the Public Works Department to push on the GisborneBotorua railway. The Union naked that at least £50,000 a year should bo spent on the work. . At tho suggestion of tho Mayor, it was decided that he should represent the wishes of tho Union to the Premier, with the object of obtaining tho fulfilment of tho same

HAITI HOADS. Air Vincent Barker, on behalf of a number of Keisi resident?, drew attention to the deplorable state of Harris street beyond the convent buildiog. Cr'Lysnar stated that bo had boen ovor the road, and it was io ft wretched state. When driving over it ho observed seven other vehicles all slushing through the mud. It was necessary to have the road attended to. - Cr Colley usid tbr.t it was absolutely a waste of money to ihir.k of repairing tho rood at the prrsent season. Cr Bright pointed out that tho work had alroatfv boen authorised, and would bo attended to by the Overseer whon the opportunity presented itself. Cr Colby advised that tho road should be left for the present. His own firm would bo carting ovor the road during the next week or bo. It was decided to attend to tho road when the Overseer deemed it advisaolo. BOARDING HOUSE LICENSES.

Neale, inspector under the Slaughtering and Inspection Acl, reported as follows : •“ I beg to hand you the following report re the premises occupied by the butchers in this abattoir district—Gordon and La,v ; These ore new premises, and are kept in good order. The ground at tho back of the ehop is very boggy, I recommend that this license bo granted, provided the boggy ground is gravolled. T. Goldsmith". I nave not hod an opportunity to visit these promises, but will report on them before your noxt mooting. E. DCarrieß: This shop in very clean. Kowley Hill : These promises arc very old and delapidated. I recommend that thie license bo granted, conditionally that new promises are erected as soon as possible. MeConDell and Co. : These premises aro satisfactory, with the exception that there is no drain. I recommend that this license be grantod. J. Maynard : These premises are kept very clean, but badly noed drainage connection. I recommend that a license be granted, trusting that in time Mr Maynard will obtain mora suitable premises. G. H. Noroross : These premises, situated at Makaralra, aro very suitable, and I recommend a license should be granted. Cr Harding urged the advisability of erectiog two.more workmen’s cottages at tho ttbaHoii'S. Report to be submitted. Tho Committee appointed 4s enquire into the killing at the freezing werks reported os follows After giving the subject caroful consideration the Committee would recommend that both works be allowed to supply small goods, such as tongues, tails, kidaoye, hearts, rte., to the , trade only, freo as heretofore; and that Messrs Nelson Bros, bo ollowod io sell s meat to their employees only upon tho paymont of the meat purveyors’ license foe of £5, and £2 10s per annum for abat-

fcoirs fees. Of course this arrangement holds good whilst employees only are supplied. The Committee also recommend that as there is not sufficient cottage accommodation at the abattoirs that steps bo taken to supply the want and the cottages bo erected forthwith .if possible. On the motion of Cr Bees ft was decided to make application to the Govcrarasrif for a furthor lean of ten per cent, to complete tho cottages at the abattoirs. The recommendations contained in Mr iSfoqlo’s report were adopted. PUBLIC WOBKS’ COMMITTEE.

The Public Works Committee reported ) that they had visited Clifford street East, j and approved of the werk being done by the overseer iu filling up the creek. The > overseer was authorised to repair tho I Bivorsido Boad bridge. A rough sketch of the fence for Bead’s Quay was approved of and tho overseer was asked to push on with tho work. They recommended that tho ovovaeor be empowered to fence off certain parts of streets in order to regulate tho truffic, so that tho roads do not become rutty. The question of removal of trees was discussed and it was rosojved to recommend that all trees in Gladstone Boad as far as Boebuck road come down, nud that tho overseer be empowered to allow any tree over 2ft in diameter to bo dug out, not cut down, by persons requiring soma for wood. _ Crs Whinray and Harding urged that tho trees in Gladstone Boad should not be removed, whilst Cr Colley and the Mayor spoke in favor of tho trees being done away j A resolution that tho trees be allowed to remain was lost and the Chairman’s motion adopting the report was carried. 1 INSPECTOB’S BEPOKT.' Tho Borough Inspector reported as 1 follows: — • 1 “ Since your last meeting I have been > inspectingin different parte of the

borough, and find most places in a satisfactory condition of cleanliness. During tho past week I have inspected all tho boardiop-houHos applying for licenses, and recommend that tho applications bo grauted. Tho bedrooms in oach house are in good order and not overcrowded ; tho bods and bodding oro clean ana well found, and tho housos which reqim-o hro escapes arc providsd with ropes for that purpose. I havo likewise inspected p.accs usod for public worship, halls, theatres, and places of amusement, ana turn tkoro is plenty of exit in case of panic or fire. . 1 would therefore recommend that licenses bo grantod. I also inspected places where explosives and daugorous materials are kept, and rocommond that licenses bo granted. I would recommend your Council purchase tho sanitary plant used by Mr Wilkinson far the removal of fever stools, as ho offers it to tho Couucil foi the sum of iGI3.” Tho report was adopted. OVEKSEEU’S BE POUT.

Tho Overseer’s roport, which was read and adopted, was as follows : “ Since the 14th iust-. a quantity of gravel came to baud, tho bulk of which has been taken to tho abattoirs. borne necss sary repairs aco being done, and if the supply continues X hope to have Grey street finished, which is much noeded. Crawford road.—X am having drains cut in this road, os authorised. Ormond road. X have had tho sides of this road fillod in and trimmed off, ai suggested by your Council. A good deal of ctbor repairing work ha 3 been done. A crossing haa boon put in at tho wharf a 3 authorised. Ivaiti bridge.—The decking of this bridgo has been completed. Plans for a footway oo this bridge will be before your Council at this meeting for approval. Tho repairing of tho bridge at the Riverside road has been put in hand, ao recommended by the works committee. This work will be substantial, and will bo made so that tuo bridge can be widened at any futuro fcimo, and made suitable for stock ancl ether hoavy traffic.” The report was acoptod. TENDERS.

Mr G. Dunno’s teuder tor tho supply of hay for the abattoirs was accepted, tho price being £1 14s por ton. Two teudors were received.
