Colonrl Portrc has resigned and seve-o3 his connection with the Defence foicss of the colony. He has taken a position aa president of the Te Eawhiti Maori Council, and will be stationed on the East Coast In this capacity he will be able to influence large ereas of native land being thrown, open, for settlement.
