AN IMPORTANT COMMISSION
(Per Press Association.) Auckland, last night. Tho. Native Lands Trusts Commission, appointed to enquiro into tho administration of native lands entrusted to various bodies for tho education of Maori children in tho North Island, opened to day. Sir I as. Prendergast is president. The evidence of Mr Cochrane, Anglican Church Registrar, was taken this morning.
SUPREME COURT. I -Now Plymouth, last night. In the Supreme Court Judge Edwards expressed congratulations on the lightnoes | of the calendar, which ho thought gave evidence of the prosperity of ehe district and well-being of the inhabitants. Only one hill was prosented, against Jonathan Adams, charged with carnally knowing a girl under 16. A, true bill was returned, and the case is proceeding. A Maori man named Whakariru Whatitiri, who pleaded guilty in tho Lower Court to burglaries at Eltham and Inglewood, was sentenced to four years’ imprisonment.
BREACHES OF. TIKE FACTORIES ACT,
Wanganui, last night. At the Magistrate’s Court this morning Johnson, manager of the Arnmoho Meat Freezing Works, wan fioed ,620 and costs for a breach of tho Factories Act in not paying a boy under 18 for Good Fridsy and Easter Monday. The defence sot up was that the Company was working under the meat workers’ award, which, it was contended, overrode the Factory Act. Other cases are ponding.
FOUND DEAD IN THE POLICE CELLS.
Napier, last night. A native named Meta JHerini, arrested for drunkenness on Saturday, was found dead in tho cells early yesterday morning. He was visited sovoral times during the night, and appeared to be sloeping naturally. His relatives say that decoased complained of his chest for some timo.
A SMART .YOUNG MAN. Wellington, last night. A young man who escaped from the prisoners’ room of the Court on Friday was recaptured at Kaitoke and brought back to Wellington this morning.
THE WINTER SHOW. Dunedin, last Dight. The takings at the Winter Show for the four days Was a record for New Zealand,being £B4l. Last year’s total was £743.
