It was dooidod to give notico to Mr Oatridgo to remove 0.0 overgrowing hedge at Whatoupoko, which interfered with telephone wires. _ „ , , . The Health Oflacor, Hr DoLisle, asked the Council to t.ako proooodings against cooupiere of a house at Pakowhai under soction 2, sub section 5) of the Public Health Aot, 1903. The Wairon County Oounoil adviseu that To Reinga Falls bridge, giving access to Runliituri Valley, was reported to bo in a dangerous condition, and tho present site oondenanod as imprnolicablo. The only site for a now bridgo waß boibo distance higbor up the Hangaroa river, and os this was in tho Cook County, Wairoa, of course, had no power to oroct a bridgo there, and wished to know if tho Cook Counoil would oreot the bridge, which govo access to a number of Cook County ratepayers. Tho Oounoil dooidod that the matter was beyond their moans, and on tho motion of Cr Clayton it was agreed to allow the Ruakituri settlors to expend their thirds as they thought fit. A number of Patutahi ratepayers drew a l tontion to tho bad state of the drain fronting tho Patutahi Hotel. Tho drain had not been cleaned out for fivo years. — Referred to Engineer. Mr G.O. Robertson, Hauiti, wrote on behalf of Tologo riding ratepayers, placing urgent requirements before the Oounoil through tho medium of their representative, Cr Murphy, The Council were asked (1) for a return of moneys expended in Tolago riding for the past year, aB tho settlers, objeo'ed to the way in which money was spent, especially on Arakihi and Tauwharoparae roads ; ' (2) to have Takapau-Hauitircad formed and gravelled, and Government be asked to give a grant in aid, as being tho only road from Wigan to the port; (3) tho culverts now buried in the rood to bo lifted up ; (4) all Council work to be let by tender in tho spring ; (5) ail motal to be blinded with clay and well covered; (6) the ratepayers favored Mr Kenway’s petition re his rates being paid to Tolago riding. The Clork submitted a return of the moneys spent, whioh showed that the Tolago, as compared with other ridings,, had rooeived its full share of expenditure. Tho Council deoided to request the Government to give a grant for tho Hauiti road, and the other matters were adjourned until the estimates were con-, sidered. Or Murphy presented a petition requesting tho Council to form and metai Cook street, also Monkhonse street, Tolago Bay. Tho potition was signed by 28 settlors. The engineer said to metal Cook street for tho eight chains, and 30 chains forma tion, would cost £l5O. Cr Harding said if tho two streets could not bo done tho settlers -would like one done. They had a bridge now, but no connection with Waiapu main road. Cr Murphy pointed out that Tolago Bay •people had raised ,£16.000 in private Joans out of £45,000 total indebtedness of the county. ’ , , . ' . Cr Harding said there was no doubt that Tolago Bay people had been very good •helping themselves. This was tho timo of 'the year to do the work, as in the summor the sand would blow away. Cr Clayton supported the work if the Council's funds would stand it. It was deoided to undertake the foirna.tion and metalling of Cook street, ENGINEER’S REPORT.
Mr Do G. Fraser, County Engineer, reported : • , “Contrast 117, formation Mangatokerau—Satisfactorily completed. . “Contract 118, formation Mill road, Parematn —This contract, will bo completed in a few days, including the erection of two small bridges. “Contraot 121, metalling, .Wainui ; Will be completed on original contraot tbis week. . “ Contract 123, bridlo track formation— Owing to continuous wet weather this contract will be behind time. Wharekopae-—No start bos yet been made with this work. Contract 128, formation abattoirs road —A start‘was made a few days ago. Tho western end is also boing'made passable fur Wheoi traffic. " Owing to continuous heavy rains, the toads have suffored, and it has bcon neoesaery to employ extra surluoe labor, “1 would ask instructions re proposed I bridge at Marrietaha, or as to whether tho Council proposes to deviate tho road to avoid tho two crossings. Somo confusion appears to exist in the Hoads Department Office, Napier, iss to what the requirements of the Council: are. Every endeavor was made to explain the situation, both personally and by letter, but from tho latest correspondence the District Hoad Engineer still maintains that the money, voted was for bridging the first crossing, and that if the proposod deviation was carried out it would leave tho crossing still unbridged ; whereas the true position is that tho first crossing is already bridged, and the proposed deviation would do away with the necessity of bridging tho other two cross ings. . “ With regard to the strengthening of the Waipaoa bridge, I would respectfully ask tho Council if it is intonded to effect only such repairs as will render the bridge safe for ordinary wheel traffic, or whether the bridge should be strengthened to carry tfaotion engine traffic.” COAST BOAD.
Ct Morphy urged that steps should be taken ty improve the Coast road in the vicinity of the Pnatae rocks. The engineer said this section spoilt the whole Coast road.. Thoro were two proposed routes, which should both be sur' veyed. The longer route, when went in at Cooper’s, was the bettor, as it avoided most of the hills. This would cost £7OOO, as npainst £2OOO for tho other. Or Harding said that if the matter were put before the Government in a practical way they would meet the Council. He moved that the enginneer bo asked to survey both routes. Cr Gray and the Chairman did not think the Council should wait until the surveys were fioished before approaching the Government. The Council decided to instruct tho Engineer to survey both routes, also to draw the attention of the Government to the desperate noed there was for an improvement in the road. TOBAGO BAY BRIDGE.
Permission was granted to Cr Harding to withdraw his hotico of motion in regard to the reduction of tolls on the Tolago Bay bridge. Gents’ Black and Colored Sox, Sd, Is, Is 3d, Is 6d, Is 9d per pain ; Specially; Imported, and At [Value. Be sure arid see these at CL P.QSIJ3 A3iD COVS
