FIRES AT NELSON,
COLLEGE RESIDENCE DESTROYED.
(Per PreSs Association.’) Nelson, last night 'occurred this afternoon, when a I lEtoen-roomed residence rented by the j lege - goveroors, and in which two latere aodv eighteen boys Blept, was ally destroyed, together with contents, gasiet had been lighted there in the jrning, but np fire, by the maids who tended from the collage house, and no ia was in the building when the fire ocrred, the hoys being away in classes, ia fire had a complete hold when obeyed and nothing was saved. The asters lost valuable books and the boys hat they had not with them. Twelve of ,e boys suffered at the previous fire, rrangements were at once made for I warding those burned out. The building ■as owned by Mrs Eaikes and was insured sr LSOO in the Sun office. The college uthorities had the furniture insured for j6OO only, which was distributed between he Victoria, South British, New Zealand, jiverpool, London and Globe. A second fire broke out about five o clock it the sash and door factory in the timber irards of H. Baigent. Work had ]ust topped and Miss Baigent, seeing the glow opstairs gave the alarm. Fortunately several of the men had not left the yard snd tho fire was put out before any damage to the building was done. Evidently a spark had blown through the open window and ignited the sawdust, which set fire to the shavings, etc. There was practically mo loss.
