(Par Press Association.) Dunedin, last night. The winter A. and P, Show was opened by the Minister for Agrioulfcure this afternoon. The weather was perfect, and there was a large attendance of country visitors. In fat cattle Clarkson and Sons, of Christ* church, and A. J. Keith, of Camaru, wore the principal exhibitors. In the dairy section competition, the best three boxes of factory butter suitablo for export resulted : Canterbury Central first, Taieri Peninsula second, South Canterbury third. Beßt two boxes of factory butter suitable for export, open to North Island competitors only : Cheltenham Dairy Company 1, Cardiff (Stratford) 2, Maketawa (Inglewood) 3. Gore took first place for the two best factory-made cheeses suitable for export white or colored, and Wailcouaiti for best five owt of full cream, New Zealand ched-dar-shapsd cheese, suitable for export. The Minister* for Lauds yesterday visited Greenfield settlement. In. an interview subsequently Mr Duncan said that if Greenfields did not turn out a suocbbs, the Government need not buy any more land for settlement in the South. He mentioned that either Hillend station, Clydevalo estate, on tho south bank of the Molyneux, owned •by the New Zealand and Australian Land Company, or Clifton estate, Waiwera, would likely bo required for close settlement.
The National Dairy Association to-day discussed tho question of railway freights, seeking; to have.freights on dairy produce reduced to the Bame level as tho grain freight, t instead of at present fifty per cent, higher. They also sought to have preferential railway rates to remove the disadvantage of factories distant from* a seaport. Mr Milne was re-elected Presi dent.
