HOW HE EMBEZZLED HIS EMPLOYERS’ MONEY.
i (Per Presa Association.) ' Auckland, last night. ' A butcher’s rider-out, named James W. R. Hunter, was charged in the Police Court this morning before Mr Kettle, S.M., with having while acting as a servant of R. and W. Hellaby, Ltd., butchers, stolen £62 17s, the property of his employers. He was also charged with obtaining meat to the value of £26 Is 9d from his employers by false pretences. Mr S. May, who prosecuted, stated that part of accused’s duty had been to take weekly or monthly bills to customers and receive money. He bad failed -to account for various Bums amounting altogether to £62 7s 2d. To enable him to hide tho thefts Hunter had rewritten the accounts sent out by the firm, striking out the 11 account renewed ” item in the bills which he gave to customers. Since accused’s arrest he has dona everything possible to clear up the matter. John Payne, branch auditor for R. and W. Hellaby, Ltd., stated with regard, to the charge of obtaining meat by false pretences that when customers ceased to deal with the firm Hunter continued to bring in orders, though meat did not reach the person who was supposed to have ordered it. “ I admit that everything in tho statement is correct,” was accused’s reply to the formal charge at tho conclusion of the evidence, and ho was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence.
