The annjual social' meebitnig 'of She Salivation Army will be held, ah the Barmcks tQ-m.orpofw evening-: 1 His Worship tho Mayor, will preside. A meeting o£ the East Coast Railway League will be held in the Borough Council chambers to-morrow afternoon for the purpose of meeting Mr Carroll in regard to several matters of importance, A Ittrge attendance is requested. During the present month Mr A. J’ McCurdy, colonial organiser of the Farmers’ Union, will speak and meet the settlers at most of the country places. The dates of tho meetings are advertised in this issue. Thß first fixture is To Araroa on Thursday next, and from that place Mr McCurdy will work down the coast. There was a crowded attendance at tho Theatre Royal last evening when the Rev. D. Parry delivered the first of a series of addresses on tho no-licenße question, the subject being " Pair Play.” The Rev. G. Hounsell presided. Tho lecturer gave an eloquent address, and was aocordod a most attentive bearing.
ilt is hardly nseoesary to remind our readers of tho address to be given this evening in His Majesty’s Theatre by the Hon. J. Carroll. Sinoo his arrival from Wellington the member for tho district has delivered two addresses in the country, and his appearauce in Gisborne has been looked forward to with a great deal of interest by all sections of tho community. His Worship the Mayor will preside. Mr Carroll leaves for Wellington on Wednesday.
Last evening, under the auspices of the Gisborne Spiritualistic Society, Mr H. E. Howes delivered his fifth lecture in Townley’s Hall, in tho presence of a large attendance,the subject being “Spiritualism, the Comforter.” Ho claimed that the oomforter, as referred to in the Bible in the teachings of St. John, and as regards tb@ truth of phenomena, epiiit return, etc,, could be attested to by tens of thousands, including ministers of the orthodox churches. Archdeacon Colley, Cameron Farran, etc. The lecture was followed by olnirvoyant descriptions. A' very heavy s©a was ruainiiig in the Bay on Saturday morning when, the Wai'hi went, out to tendon the Mararoa, arid it ‘was ‘ .witli; the greatest 'difficulty that Captain Neil managed to get the Wad hi alongside the steamer.
