FOOTBALL

The Poverty Bay Rugby Union district cup competitions were continued at tha Victoria Domain last Saturday in verycold and threatening weather. The match was started at 1.30 p.m. between West Bud and the school. The schools -- boys were much too light for their opponents, who defeated them easily. Mr Howard held the whistle. The junior match, on the small ground, was a very'** - poor exhibition of Rugby, the players showing a total disregard of all the finer points which make the game attractive. The play was evenly contested, West leading by a point until close to the finish. T e West End backs then broke away with I some passing, and Cowan beating I bis men well sent the ball out Ito Bonrke, wbo scored. Cowan kioked splendidly for West End, who won by 12—' points to 8. Mr W. Gibson had oijarge of j the wins'le. The senior game was between I West End and Haiti City, and the latter, I after a stubbornly contested match, I avenged their previous defeat. Haiti-City* I attacked strongly led by Martin, Bayly, 1 and Leyden, and a mis-kick by Helly j almost let them in, Tate forcing. Brown 1 carried play into Kaiti-City’s 25, but bein£ I unassisted, Paflet was able to bring t&S I play back to centre by a fine kick. Carr I kicked high, and Tear following up well I stopped Murphy’skick and scored. Wepiha I failed to increase. Erom a penalty-dii I front of West End's goal Erekana equalised I matters with a nice kick. The spell ended I with three points eaoh. Haiti-City I had much the best of the second I spell. Hay, at half, made some ftax I openings, and started his side passing'. I Ha was ably assisted by Delamere at five--1 eights, but Erekana and Buflett were I unable to handle the leather accurately. I The ball was wet and heavy and th!3~ I ground slippery. Nolan, with a fine dash, I invaded West End’s 25, and was tackled. Iby Bene close to the line. Erom the I ensuing scrum, Hay took the ball behluri_ I the pack, and, feinting cleverly, scored. j few minutes later Hay gave Delamere an opening, who transferred to Schrafß c , Abe latter scoring a fine try. Kaiti-C'ity Ejtfll kept up the attack, and placed three mo?£vpoints to their total before the whistle sounded no-side, the game resulting, HaitiCity 12 point?. West End 3. For HaitiCity Martin, Leyden, and Hansen wera the most conspicuous in the pack, whileBayly and Murphy on the wings were in fine form. Hay and Delamere were the best of the backs, heing well assisted by Sehrafft and Nolan. Bene, Wepiha, Tier, y and Carr worked hard in tha front rank ' for West End, and Brown, Roderick, and Kelly showed good form in the back division.
