On Sir Michael Hicks-Beach’s motion Mr James Lowther was unanimously chosen Speaker. Mr Balfour and Sir H. Campbell-Bannerman congratulated him, and the House adjourned until the 20th. Reoeived 11.4 p.m., June 9.
At tbs Australasian Chamber of Commerce meeting, Mr Doxat presiding, Senator Best, of Victoria, read a paper on intra-imperial trade. He said a zollverein or some modification ought to be the ultimate ideal of the British Empire. He advised British exporters to work with greater energy and enterprise to meet the competition of Germans and Americans. The chief operating cause of Britain’s loss in Australian trade was the fiscal systom. Dr Cockburn deprecated the Opposition trying to dictate what subjects the Conference should discuss. Mr Best said he was surprised that representatives should be called to a Conference to find important subjects of dlsoussion debarred.
