While the submarine was running on tho surface, with the hatch open and four persons standing outside, she suddenly, without tho slightest warning, dived and disappeared. The four outside, including the commander, were washed overboard and rescued. Fifteen were drowned. An hour after the accident an oxplosion occurred under the water, probably caused by gasoline vapor. A quantity of wreckage rose, suggesting that the submarine had been blown to pieces. The King condoled with the relatives of the victims.
