The dredge John Townley goes on the iip to-day for the half-yearly overhauling. At the Police Court on Saturday a fire offender for drunkenness was cautioned and discharged. The mail steamer Sierra, with the British mails of Dondon date May 6th, is due at Auckland to-day. The half-yearly meeting of the Turanganui Lodgo of Druids has been postponed until Friday evening next at 8 o’clock. The railway revenue and expenditure for the four weeks ending May 29th on tho Gisborne-Karaka railway was £482 I revenuo and £3OO expenditure. (I To-day’s war cables explains the mys tery of the disappearance of the Jemtchug first by stating that tho vessel sank in one minute, aud next fay announcing her I arrival at Manila ! A poll will be hold to-day for the return ,of one member to the Gisborne HarborBoard to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Mr William Cooper, The Bast Coast Mounted Rifles and the City Band hold a concert at Te Karaka this evening in aid of the Te Karaka library fund. The train will leave Gisborne for Te Karaka at 5 this evening, returning after the concert. Mr •£. Crawford, chemist, of Auckland, arrived in Gisborne by the Tarawera yesterday for the purpose of taking over Mr T. Hood’s Masonic Pharmacy, which business he has recently purchased. Mr W. Dissent Clayton has taken the agency for the Norwich Accident Insurance Company, which is one of the oldest accident insurance societies in the world, although it has only recontly started a branch in New Zealand. (the lowest procurable, and Mr Clayton has full power to settle claims in Gisborne, thus saving vexatious delays. At the Victoria Domain on Saturday the Kaiti-City Juniors defeated Huia by 15 points (three converted goals) to nil. Kaiti-City had the best of the play throughout. Luttrell. Witty and SchraSi handled the boll nicely for the winners,and did sbms good passing. Mr WyDyard was referee.
In Towuley’3 Hall last evening Mr Howes delivered his fourth lecture, tbe subject being “ The Light of the World.” Tbaro was a large attendance. The lecturer treated tbe subject in a masterly manner. He referred to tbe teachings of Christ, Budda, Mosrs and Tolstoi as the I lights of the world. At the close of the meeting Mr Howes gave a few clairvoy >n I descriptions. These lectures arc creating a great deal of interest. °
