MOTU NOTES.

MOTU FARMERS’ UNION,

(From Our'Own Correspondent.) May 30.@ A special mooting of members of the abose was hold on Friday afternoau to discuss matters of importance in tho district, with a view to them being represented by their delegate, Mr T. Elliot, at tho meeting of the Provincial Conference, to be held in Gisborne on Monday.' There wero present : Messrs P. Wright (Chairman), T. Elliot. T. Tyreman, O. Richmond, C. Hanson, W. J. Baigent, W. B. Orr. C. H. Bridge (Secretary), and E. Richardson;, The Provincial Executive wrote regardiu.g the present unsatisfactory way of the importation of sterilised bones from other parts of the country. Mr Elliot said that the chief veterinary surgoon was in favor of the bones being sterilised in Now Zealand: Although two appointments had been'made for the supervision of such works in India and Australia'they were only political ones, and no doubt a certain amount of sterilising would take place. It was decided, on the proposition of Mr E. Richardson, seconded.by./:Mc C- Han sen, that the delegate, Mr Elliot, support the Executive at the Provincial Conference.

The Secretary of the Rakaroa branch wrote stating that tboy would carry on a stock bureau on the same lines as the Motu branch last year, and that they would be pleased to exchange lists for the mutual advantage of both branches. —De. cidcd to accede to the request. Mr A. W. Kidd wrote drawing attention to the need of the Motu township streets being metalled and drained. Those present were unanimously in favor of the work'being done,as it was an urgent necessity. E |lt was decided to ask tbe Executive to give their aid in procuring a substantial vote of £50,000 for the Gisborne Motu railway, in view of the borrowing policy propounded by the Premier. The township question evoked a great deal of d'scussioD, and it was decided that tbe delegate lay tbe matter before the Executive with a view of having one laid off at once. After a few weeks of cold, wintry weay ther an improvement has taken place. A Club competition, by the Motu fence Rifle Club, will be held on Prince of Wales Birthday. Tbe following are tho committee in oharge of arrangements for the Rifle Club Ball, to be held on tbe 16th June : Mefsrs T. Elliot. W. B. Orr, F. Hansen, E. Calvert, and Deputy Captoiu Roed.

Ar to the proposal to give tbo free hold to the lessees of Crown lands, tl e Premior pointed out that if Mr Massey bad bis way 10,000 tenants would receive a free gift of about half a million sterling at the country’s oxpense. Tbe moral aspect of the question was touched upon in the pertinent query : “ If the State begins to break faith with its tenants, where will it end ? ” But Mr Sodden reached tho very heart of Mr Massey’s policy with a horni - thrust at tho freeholders who want some one to help them pay the land tax. Assuredly it would lighten tbo financial burden of the freeholders if a large number of lessees were granted absolute ownership. And if the Crown tenants are all converted into freeholders what is to supply the placo of tho present Crown lands revenue, which now stands at about £483,000 ? Financially, Mr Massey’s scheme would be disastrous to tho colony ; and morally it stands condemned as an attempt to break a Bolemn contract between the State and its tenant?, and to sacrifice important public interests for the benefit of a small class at the instance of a number of poode who arc anxious to be relieved of their doe 3haro of financial responsibility toward the Stßte. —Auekl&pd Star.
