With one exception the police reports on the various hotels in the dietciot were of a highly satisfactory character. In the ease referred to, Constable Kelly, Port Awanui, reported, relative to remarks made by His Honor Mr Justice Edwards agoiust the conduct of the proprietor of To Rahui hotel in connection with tho charges of.thott against Ngatai Wauoa and Panikena Carr. Previous to this case the conduct of the licensee was apparently good, and he appeared to have conducted his hotel well, so no complaints were made against tho management of the house. The Bench refused to renew tho. application of James Boyce for this house. Mr A. AV. Bees, who appeared for applicant, pointed out that notwithstanding what had transpired in connection with tho Supremo Court case, the police found there were no previous objections to Mr Boyce. There was no conviction on the license, and there was hurdly sufficient in the remarks which had fallen from the judge to say that the license should not be granted to him. . , , Tho Chairman Baid the Bench under section 63 of tho Act of their own motion could take notice of the matter, and they were not disposed to grant a license to the present applicant. If MrHeos likod, they would adjourn tho application so as to enable him to find some other person for the house. The Bench wore unanimous in refusing to grant tho license. Mr Rees asked that tho license be granted provisionally for three months, so as to give time to obtain another applicant. Mr Boyce.only got a mail once a fortnight, and tho matter could not bo orrangod by the 30tb inst. The Bench decided that they could not grant a license for three months to the present applicant, and adjourned till the 30th inst. to enable Mr Roes to find another licensee. The following transfers were granted : Turanganui Hotel, E. H. Mackey to C. Lomax (Mr Nolan appearing) ; Tolago Bay, G. Spence to "W. F. Sinclair (Mr Nolan!; Lake House, Tiniroto, A. All other applications for renewal of licenses were granted Bubjeot to oertain repairs being done in several casßS. TE KARAKA HOTEL.

In regard to tbe alterations to the Te Kurulsa Hotel, Mr Nolan stated it was the intention of the lioonseo, if continuance \ were carried at tbe next local option poll, to add largely to the building. The house was a new one, and it was unfair to ask j Mr Allon so close to the poll to go to such heavy expenee. Mr Allen was willing to close the bar slide in the passage so as to give privaoy to those going to the diningroom. There were four sitting-rooms with fire-places in the house. The suggested alteration would mean outting off four r °The matter was adjourned until the 80th instant to allow the committee to inspect the building to see wbtrt oould be done. The Chairman said the committee had no desire to press unduly on Mr Allbd. CONDUCT OF HOTELS. The -Chairman said that several complaints had boon made to him and other members of the Bench in regard to the conduct of some country houses, bub as the persons making the complaints had not tbo eourogo to come forward and give evidence before the Committee, the latter were powerless t-o act. It was not right that these complaints should be made without giving the hotelkeepors an opportunity to defend themeolves. . Mr Nolan said he would go further, and say that if ho were one of the Committee he would not listen to complaints. People should go to the sergeant, and then aoy complaints would come before the_ Committee. Some of the compla ntß might be true, and some might not. Ho had seen several remarkable effusions which were certainly not genuine. Mr Barton said of course the Committee would not take notice unJesß people who made the complaints would coma forward. He bad told them to do this if they had complaints to make. CONDITIONAL LICENSE. A conditional license for the Mutawhero Baleyards for the 22nd inst. was granted to 3 J. H. Aislabie.
