NATIVE LAND RATING.

an important land point.

(Per Press Association.') Auckland, last night,

The Assessment Court for Kawhia County opened at OtorohaDga on May 30, Mr H. W. Northeroft, S.H.,' presiding. The first oase proved to be a very important one. The objector, a Maori, was represented by Mr John Ormsiby, who stated he objected to the valuation for the reason that the land in question being inalienable, in common with all other Maori lands in this district, had no soiling value. Mr McGowan, representing the Valuation Departmont, strongly combatted Mr Ormsby’s contention, and submitted that tho question of restriction imposed by the Act was quite outside the matter in dispute. The Court gave it as their opinion that tho land in question being under restrictions, which made it inalienable, hod do selling valuo as laid down by the Valuation of Lands Act, 1900, bat suggested that the Supreme Court should be appealed to to decide the point for the guidance of the Court.
