From the Ist May until this morniDg 5.758 inches of rain fell in Wellington, this being contributed by 15 wet days. The Customs and excise duties collected at the four chief ports of the colony during the quarter ended March 31st were as follows: Wellington ,£176,900, Auckland £173,820, Dunedin £116,140, Lyttelton £103,866. The amount colleoted under the preferential tariff was £15,138.

At the Supreme Court Mr Justice Edwards observed in Court that it was by no means easy for a prisoner out on bail to escape. They would find it au uncommonly difficult matter to run away, especially in a country so well surrounded by Beas as Now Zealand. In any attempt to leave the colony they wore almost certain to be arrested immediately they boarded their steamer. The Supreme Court concluded the trial of Arthur Milsom Edmonds, charged with committing perjury, in the [evidence in the Magistrate’s Court concerning certain commercial transactions with Lees and Co., also gum morehants at Auckland. The Premier visited Tapanui to-day, and was welcomed by the Mayor and others. Ho visited the district high school and initiated a branch of the Navy League. He then visited the State nursery, and was afterwards entertained at dinner. In the evening he addressed a public mooting, the Tapanui Rifles forming a bodyguard on the way to the Town Hall, which was well filled, settlers being present from all round the district. The Premier’s address was on the lines of previous speeches. A unanimous vote of thanks to the Premier and confidence in the Government was carried. Mr James Allen, M.H.8., addressed a meeting at the Princess Theatre this ovening. Considering the disagreeable night there was a good attendance. The speaker reviewed and criticised the Premier’s recent address, and re-stated the position of the Opposition. A vote of thanks was passed nem eon.
