FOOTBALL.

KAITI-CITY DEFEATS HUIA.

The district competitions were continued at the Victoria Domain on Saturday last. The weather was fine, and there was a large attendance. Huia attacked strongly from the kick-off, and kept Kaiti-City | busily defending, Hay and Newton showing up in stopping the Huia foot rushes, Wauchope, Sherratt, Swann and Higgs, in the Huia vanguard, kept up a fierce attack on the Kaiti-Oity line, forces and five yards’ semms jbeing the order.'! Huia continued the attack, four penalties in quick succession giving relief. From a serum at centre Lasker came away with the ball at his toes, Higgs and Wauchope carrying it on to the 25 yards’ line, where Bobinson picked up running at full speed, aDd feinting cleverly ran in unchallenged, scoring alongside the posts. Tait made a poor attempt in the kick at goal. Huia 3, KaitiCity 0. Kaiti-City made an alteration in their backs, who were quite disorganised, 1 Brekana goiDg wing three quarter and Puflett centre. With the exception of Hay, 1 at half, and Schrnfft, wing three quarter, the Kaiti-City backs wore showing a spiritless defence, and but for the ignorance of the rudiments "of the ,gamo displayed by the Huia men, which brought the whistle into constant requisition, the Kaiti-City line would havo been crossed repeatedly. Witty at full back for Kaiti-City put in some usefnl work, and saved some likely looking scores. He should, however, make more use of the line. Bobinson marked a weak kick by the Kaiti-City full back, and Swann kicked a fine goal. Huia 7, Kaiti City 0. Near the ond of the spell KaitiCity attacked strongly, ond Puflett bad a pot at goal right in front, but the kick went wide. In the second spell Kaiti-City took the aggressive, their skipper taking the field at half-time. Hay now shone out time and again, making fine openings, and getting the ball out clean and quick to his five eights, Bayly at wing-forward for Kaiti-City put in some smart work and was on tho ball all the time. From a loose foot rush Kaiti-City crossed tho line, Erikt-ma failing with the kick. Dolamere obtained possession at mid-field and, beating a couple of opponents, transferred to Puflett, who handed it on to Erekana, tho latter scoring after a strong run down the line. He took the kick and landed a magnificent gaol. Kaiti-City 8, Huia 7. From a loose rush Allen picked, and scored Kaiti-City’s third try, the game ending Kaiti-City 11, Huia 7. For the winners Hay and Sehraffc were the most conspicuous, doing all their work in a finished mannor. Delamere and Puflett put in good work in the second spell, both kicking splendidly. Witty was also an improvement at fullback. Erekana has not struck form yet. Of the forwards, Newton, P. Hickey, Bayly, Allen and Leyden ware tbo pick. The latter played a trifle over hard at times, but is a good honest workor nevertheless. For Huia backs Bobinson was the pick,aDd played tho best game on the ground. He did all his work in a finished manner. Bowe was disappointing at centre threequarter, although he did some good work. Te BoiDga and Leah on the wings worked hard. McCredie, at half, showed some of . his old form when ho captained the Poverty Bay representative team in 1900. Of tho forwards Wauchope, Sherratt, l SwaDU, and Higgs showed up oonspicui ously ; Park also showed good form. The > chief feature in tho play wa3 tho formation 1 of tho scrums. The forwards on both sides 5 simply know nothing about formation, and 1 the ball was not heeled out cleanly once i during the match. Mr Wynyard acted ae 3 referee, and Messrs G. Nolan and J. Eaton 3 held the line flags.
