COMMERCIAL.

'(Eer Press Association.) Christchurch, Jast night. The local wheat market has had a firmer tone during the past few days, partly oh account of the London markets having O* risen one shilling per quarter, and also because of the scarcity of offerings. There fore, however, freights at present offered by direct steamer, and shippers say v that there is, therefore, little or no margin between the local and London prices. The offers received from London for cargoes show that there is more enquiry from there, but the price does not allow of business being done. What buying is being done for shipment is evidently in the hope of an is improvement at the other end, and the holding of freights later on. It is reported that the wheat offering last week at 2s 5d cannot now bo bought under 2s 7d, but a good shipping line of tnsoan has been x secured at 2s sd, and other small lots at a ' f slight advance on late rates. Others aro also firmer, and supplies scarce. They arqt mostly wanted for local consumption, and* only small lots are available, which are showing an upper tendenoy. There is a /- better enquiry for barley, but none is offer- “ mg. Potatoes are meeting with a better demand, and supplies are rather searoe at present, but a continuance of fine weather for digging is expected to result in larger offerings. The price is still £& per ton. >
