IMPERIAL DEFENCE.
I By Electric Telegraph—Pet Press I Association—Copyright. I Received 12.36 a.m., May 22. I London, May 21. I Sir Michael Hioks Beaoh, at the Impe--1 rial Industries Club dinner, declared that I it would be a grave mistake id the interI ests of the Empire if any self-governing I colony maintained an independent navy I instead of joining in the cost of a great Imperial navy. If anything like proportional contributions were received from the colonies, the latter must be admitted to the counsels of the Empire to decide the policy of the Empire. The cost of the navy and promotion of further union should be on the lines of common defence as parts of a common empire. Mr James, West Australian AgentGeneral, said the Imperialistic feeling in Australia was stronger than in Britain. The desire to develop a separate navy was not beoause they desired to shirk their responsibilities.
