In reply to Mr Seddon’a recent speeoh at Hamilton dealing with the land question ho said that tenants 1 tiad a good reason to fear ro-valuation, because the Government favored a Fair Rent Bill. He suggested reforming the Legislative Council by having it elected at a secrot ballot by members of boih Houses. Ho received a vote of confidence. Napier, last night. A Bbarp shook of earthquake was experienced at 12 to 8 this morning. Hastings, last night. At the Magistrate’s Court P. J. Gostigan, for stabbing B. J. O’Sullivan, was committed to trial. A slight shook of earthquake was felt at. about 7.50 this morning. There has boen heavy rain for the part two days. The weather is now clearing. Wellington, last night. The Trades Council last evening decided to write to the Premier pointing out that a large number of breaches of the Shops Aot were being committed in the city, and requesting that steps be taken to stop the breaches. Greymoutb, last night. A serious break occurred in the Blackfa *ll ooal aerial line yesterday, which wi;l scop work at the mine for some time. The line broke, and over thirty travelling trucks were smashed. The iiDe is getting much worn, and there is much discontent in the district at the delay in completing the short piece of railway required to connect the pit’s mouth with the main line. The company have guaranteed interest on the outlay. Hokitika, last night. A fire at Ross last night gutted a building owned by Phillips, and occupied by Morgan, hairdresser, and McCarthy, upholsterer. The insurances on the building are Tl5O in the Norwich Union. The stocks were uninsured.
